Never before has the human race put so much thought into the future. What will our world look like in 30 years? How will we feed ourselves? How will we move around? How will we transport our goods? How will we communicate? By the year 2050, our planet will be home to around nine billion people. With this in mind, and given the accompanying surge in demand for valuable resources combined with what are likely to be significant changes in global economic relations, Europe is set have increasing difficulty protecting jobs and the prosperity that goes with them.

“Function-integrative lightweight engineering in multi-material design” has a key role to play in the solution of the technological challenges of the future. In particular, this intelligent, holistic brand of lightweight engineering can be applied throughout the mobility sector. With its strong automobile industry, Germany therefore stands to draw special benefit from the development of innovative mobility concepts that enable not only the consolidation of existing market shares, but also the exploitation of new market segments characterized by a high level of value creation. This will nevertheless demand both the refinement of existing technologies and the reassessment of long-held convictions.

The Lightweight Engineering Symposium has established itself as an important platform for exchange between representatives from the worlds of science, business, society and politics. In addition to the cultivation of a culture of excellence in science and research, one of the symposium’s main objectives is to accelerate the transfer of technology from the laboratory to practical applications.

Focusing on the topic of “Integrated lightweight engineering – an efficient key to the globalized mobility of the future”, a range of prestigious speakers will use the 21^st Dresden International Lightweight Engineering Symposium to not only put megatrends such as digitalization, sustainability, urbanization, connectivity and mobility into tangible terms, but also present their visions and development concepts for the mobility of the future. The Lightweight Engineering Symposium will be hosted by the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at Technische Universität Dresden, who are delighted to be holding this year’s event in cooperation with the Chair of Carbon Composites at the Technical University of Munich.

Visit to Volkswagen’s Transparent Factory – a dazzling showcase for e-mobility

The new e-Golf will be produced at the Transparent Factory from April 2017 onwards, and you will have the chance to take a tour of the factory after the panel discussion on “Mobility 2040 – How will our world change?” at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum. In addition to gaining exclusive insights into both production areas and the final assembly process, you will also visit the exhibition on “E-Mobility and Digitalization”.

Participation in the guided tour of the Transparent Factory is included in the conference fee. Participants are required to register in advance using the registration form.

Departing from the Terrassenufer in Dresden

A day of futuristic topics will be followed by a nostalgic trip up the Elbe to Pillnitz Castle on a historic paddle steamer. You can look forward to an evening of stimulating speeches, discussions and conversation as you glide along the tranquil Elbe enjoying Saxon delicacies and live music.

Dresden “backstage” – a peek behind the scenes at Kulturkraftwerk MITTE

Discover the stories, buildings and concepts behind Kraftwerk MITTE – a former thermal power station and Dresden’s newest centre for art, culture and creativity. This guided tour takes an in-depth look at the conversion and revitalization of both the unique industrial buildings and the overall site. The centre is also now home to Dresden State Operetta.

Experience the flair of the theatre and the frantic rush of rehearsals at the heart of a striking 19^th and 20^th century industrial ensemble – now successfully transformed into a modern theatrical venue.

Dresden Royal Palace and its “new” exhibitions

The reconstruction of Dresden Royal Palace began in 1990 and is unique in terms of its scope and scale. The Historic Green Vault has now returned to its original rooms in the West Wing, while the former Palace Church – including its famous interlocking vaulted ceiling – has been fully rebuilt to create an outstanding event space. The Turkish Chamber, Armoury (including the Giants’ Hall) and the Gallery of the Electors have also been restored to their former glory.

Your morning tour takes you around the New Green Vault and the most recent museum spaces to be opened in the East Wing – you’ll be amazed at what they have in store!

The conference office at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden will be the meeting and starting point on both days. All tours end in the city centre.
